Last week’s apology by the PM for past adoption practices seemed to get a bit lost in the political brouhaha of the day.
You have to feel for the many mothers who felt compelled to give up their child for adoption and then spend the rest of their lives grieving for the loss of their child. Yes the stigma in former times was terrible and there were few supports for unmarried mothers but policy makers seriously underestimated the bond between mother and child and between the child and their parent.
We should bear this in mind as debate rages about the adequacy of income support for lone parents. We must begin to learn from our history.
