Make enquiry

Volunteering with Samaritans is a meaningful way to give back, connect with others and make a positive difference in your community. Whether you have a few hours to spare or are looking for an ongoing opportunity, your time and skills can help support people when they need it most.

Samaritans volunteers are crucial team members within Samaritans services. As a volunteer you will join our volunteer community who support various programs and activities throughout Newcastle, Hunter, Central Coast and the Mid-North Coast regions of NSW.

“Being at home I was more isolated, but I’ve made friends here. It’s worked out really well for me, and I think a lot of us are the same. All the customers are so nice. They tell you a lot of the stuff going on in their life or their family, sometimes they’ve got no one to share it with. It’s good to hear their stories and what they’ve been doing. We all make the time to stop and have a chat.”

What programs can I volunteer with?

Samaritans Op Shop Volunteer

Join our friendly Op Shop teams and help support the day-to-day running of our stores. From assisting customers and sorting donations to preparing and displaying stock, our volunteers play an important role in creating a welcoming shopping experience while supporting the work of Samaritans.

Disaster Recovery Volunteer

Help make a difference when communities need it most. Our Disaster Recovery volunteers provide practical care and assistance to individuals and communities affected by major emergencies. Volunteers also receive training to develop their knowledge of emergency management and disaster recovery.

Christmas Lunch Volunteer

Each Christmas Day, hundreds of people come together for Samaritans Christmas Lunch in the Park in Newcastle, sharing a festive meal, companionship and a sense of belonging.

Our volunteers help create a warm, welcoming and inclusive celebration for individuals and families who may otherwise spend Christmas alone.

Christmas Volunteer registrations generally open around October each year.
