Federal Govt must rethink plan for young unemployed

CEO Social Justice Blog

The Federal Government has been fairly quiet in recent weeks about its plans to introduce tougher measures for young unemployed people under 30.

These include no benefits for the first 6 months followed by compulsory work for the dole followed by a further 6 months without benefits.

We continue to urge our Federal Government to rethink this plan.

Of course some young people will be supported financially by their families during prolonged unemployment but many will have no support. This will surely be followed by increased homelessness and imprisonment, which would not lead to budget savings.

Such a policy would also be in breach of the UN Convention on Human Rights.
