Samaritans Grandparents as Parents (GAPS) service partnered with a range of organisations to host a picnic to celebrate and recognise grandparents who are raising their grandchildren and carers. The picnic was held at Lambton Park on Sunday 29 October and saw over 120 carers and children gather to celebrate.
Local care organisations including Samaritans, Variety, Barnardos, Mirabel and Connecting Carers partnered to host a free sausage sizzle and coffee, face painting, craft, games and a special visit from Super Hubert the magician! Guests also enjoyed a gigantic cake as a token of appreciation to the grandparents who go above and beyond.
GAPS Coordinator, Heather Robinson, said “The aim of the day was to show our deep respect and appreciation of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. We wanted to spoil them a little and celebrate all that they do. Many children in our community are living with relative and kinship carers where the GAPS team at Samaritans support these families.”
