A letter from Natalie
Below is a letter that was written by 17-year-old Natalie.
Natalie once faced homelessness. Then the Samaritans supporter community came together and pulled her into safety. Natalie now lives in Samaritans Student Accommodation. Here she receives the safety, care, and opportunities we all deserve.
Natalie wanted to share her story so that you can see that it is possible to change someone’s life.
This winter, more young people like Natalie will turn to us for help. Together, we can do more. Click here to make a donation to Samaritans Winter Appeal today.
My name is Natalie and I am 17 years old. I’m in year 12 and this year became a House Captain for my school.
I come from a small family. When I was seven years old, I was placed with a foster carer because it wasn’t safe to live at home anymore. My mum has always struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and I spent much of my childhood in and out of family refuges.
When I was thirteen, I wasn’t able to live with my carer anymore and so I spent my early teenage years couch surfing with friends. I found myself being too old for a foster care placement and so I was welcomed into an amazing home with my boyfriend at the time.
While I remain very close with him and his family, after we broke up I wasn’t able to stay there anymore which is when I found Samaritans.
I found a placement at Samaritans youth refuge where I was able to be linked up with some funding, a case worker and I felt looked after. I was very fortunate that Samaritans was able to find me a permanent place to stay at its Student Accommodation service in Wickham.
I was so excited that I would have a place for myself, and that I wouldn’t have to worry about where I might be sleeping at night, or if I would be safe.
Because of Samaritans, I have a home.
Samaritans Student Accommodation is important to me because it has
allowed me to focus on myself and to focus on school.
I have opportunities. I am able to pursue my hobbies and most importantly, my dreams for the future.
Once I finish year 12, I would love to go to University and I hope to pursue a career in the medical field. I would also love to travel and see the world.
Your support of young people like me gives us a chance to make our
dreams come true and to change our lives. Without you, Samaritans Student Accommodation would not be a reality for me.
Please give a generous gift to Samaritans 2018 Winter Appeal.
