6 Inclusive Events Around Newcastle For Youth Week 2019 | Samaritans
Here at Samaritans, we love celebrating Youth Week.
Created in 1989, Youth Week is a national event designed to celebrate young people from all walks of life.
The event is organised by young people, for young people, and it’s an opportunity for young people in the community to share ideas, celebrate their contribution to society, showcase their talents and have their voices heard.
Last year, we had the privilege to partner with headspace Maitland and support three Youth Reference Group members to go to Mardi Gras in Sydney. Olivia, Maddy and Theo celebrated “unity through diversity” – the theme of Youth Week 2018 – with the LGBTQI community of Sydney and there were lots of happy tears!
This year, we’re encouraging all young people in Newcastle, the Central Coast & the Hunter to celebrate Youth Week. We’ve collected six unmissable events in and around the area for Youth Week, including skatepark events, live music and parties!
Check out what’s happening around you this Youth Week!
#1. Wallsend Youth Week Opening Party
It’s a party at Wallsend Library…
…and it’s all about YOU.
Samaritans’ Newcastle Youth Development Officer has helped organise an incredible kick-off shindig at the Wallsend Library, where you’ll find live music, performances and free food, plus heaps of young people from around Newcastle!
Get together, share experiences and let your voice be heard within the community. This party is designed to encourage sharing and the celebration of young people in Newcastle.

If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to share your thoughts, your talents and your hobbies with the world, look no further than GABFEST 2019.
GABFEST is organised by headspace Maitland & Samaritans and is a forum for young people to perform, speak and share about the things they love most. It’s an opportunity to showcase your creative talents, whether it’s singing, live music, acting or even slam poetry.
No matter your talent, this is a safe, supportive space to share!
Ashlee Stephens has been performing at GABFEST since 2017 – and she has nothing but positive things to say about the experience.
“I would definitely recommend giving GABFEST a go; nerves are normal, but it does feel really great to be able to share what you love and what you think is important with other young people,” Ashlee said.
Come along and tell the world about the things you love. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
