5 ways to invigorate your soul in 2017

New year, new you! Or so the saying goes.

Are you looking for ways to grow yourself in 2017? Look no further; here are 5 ways to start a great year for you…

  1. Show gratitude

It only takes 10 minutes watching the news and seeing the state of our world to realise we live in a very lucky country.

Gratitude is a powerful form of mindfulness and studies* have shown it can decrease anxiety, increase focus and do wonders for your wellbeing.

An easy way to take time to be grateful is to keep a gratitude journal, writing something down at the end of each day that you are grateful for. It can be something small like seeing some beautiful flowers in your neighbour’s garden, or something bigger like a kind gesture from someone close to you.

  1. Try new things

Some of us embrace change with excitement and gusto, others prefer the reliability of consistency.

If you love changing things up, why not consider starting that hobby you’ve always wanted to try (Sewing? Soap carving? Competitive dog grooming?).

In saying that, if you prefer consistency but still want something new in your life, change doesn’t have to be big. Think of something small you could change, maybe it’s the route you walk to work or trying a different type of cereal for breakfast.

  1. Reinvigorate your passion for social justice causes

In our big, wide world, there is no shortage of causes to become involved in.

What is it that makes you passionate enough to argue with someone at a dinner party who disagrees with you? Is it animal welfare? Human rights? Gender equality? Alleviating poverty?

Find it again. Find your passion and look up the organisations local to you – or overseas – who are working in the area to make a difference. There are many ways to get involved, such as lending your talent, time or money.

  1. Volunteer

Your skills are golden to non-profit organisations. Samaritans hosted a whopping 590 volunteers last year who helped in a range of our programs, from collating food packages for families in need to picking up op shop donations and even wrapping gifts and helping families in need with gifts at Christmas.

Find an organisation that you’d love to donate your time to and get in touch. They’d be forever grateful.

  1. Recycled retail therapy

Shopping! Who doesn’t love bouncing around an op shop looking for a bargain outfit, vintage dress or unique treasure?

Indulge in some retail therapy in 2017 and hit up an op shop in your travels. You won’t regret the great things you will find! Shameless plug: you know Samaritans has three op shops in Newcastle, right?
