Increasing the pension age
In the lead up to the federal May budget we are hearing reports that the Federal Government plans to increase the pension age to 70. In some ways this makes sense, especially in response to reports that Australians in the future will live into their mid-90s. So 65-95 seems too long a period of your life to spend in retirement.
The problem is that for many people who continue to be involved in mainly manual work such as labourers and nurses etc., they already struggle to maintain their employment to the current retirement age of 65. The proposed increase will make matters worse for them. There is also a perceived bias amongst Australian employers in favour of younger workers.
Until these these two issues are addressed, Samaritans does not support an increase to the pension age.
