Good Samaritans Day
This week Samaritans celebrates a momentous milestone – Good Samaritans Day on October 14.
Good Samaritans Day this year marks 33 years since the Samaritans Foundation was formed in 1984. It is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges, the triumphs and the significant growth of our organisation over the years.
1985 saw the opening of Samaritans’ first office, which still operates today at Brunker Rd, Broadmeadow. The office housed our first Retail Shop to provide quality and affordable pre-loved items to the community. We have since grown to operate four thriving shops and have recently extended our service reach to Lake Macquarie with the opening of the Boolaroo Shop. Our services now extend across 37 commercial locations and 60 residential properties.
Creative Times and Cessnock Family Day Care Centre were also among some of the organisation’s first services. Today, our work spreads across five regions delivering over 100 diverse services. It is through the breadth of our work, underpinned by compassion, integrity and justice, that Samaritans can reach so many people in need in our community.
The last 20 years has seen significant growth for Samaritans with the number of employees tripling to over 800. This is a testament to the organisation’s success in securing grant funded projects and the growth of our service delivery to support as many people in need as possible.
Happy Good Samaritans Day!
