An Ethical Question
Many people will have been distressed at last week’s story of an asylum seeker mother denied the usual visiting rights to be with her baby in a Brisbane hospital. The baby was very ill and only a few days old.
It would be helpful for politicians, and perhaps all of us, living in what continues to be a great democratic country to discuss the ethical question: is it ever acceptable policy to cause suffering to a child in Australia in order to deter future asylum seekers?
On Monday 18 November, a group of people from Newcastle travelled by bus to Canberra to present to the Fed Govt their concerns for
1. A more humane response to asylum seekers
2. Closure of detention centers wherever they may be and
3. An increase to the Australian refugee intake.
In a democracy such as ours we can all make a difference.
