Equality for women – we all benefit
On 8 March, International Women’s Day is being celebrated across Australia and across the globe. In some countries it is a public holiday.
The event is 100 years old and there is much to celebrate in the journey towards gender equality in Australia. We are not there yet but just look at the achievements over the past 100 years in areas such as workforce participation, political life, law, medicine, sport and education etc.
Congratulations to the suffragettes, feminists and gender equality advocates who have pushed the community through so much change. There are still areas of serious concern: women from Indigenous communities, violence against women and girls, affordable child care for working mums and full equality of opportunity in management and directorships.
Full equality of women in the social, economic and political life of the nation is a matter of human rights. We would all benefit – men as well as women!
