One of the joyful occasions we experience at Samaritans each year is the Christmas Day Lunch in the Park. Each year hundreds of people from vastly different backgrounds spend 2 or 3 hours together celebrating Christmas in a way which demonstrates the love and compassion we can all have for each other.
This year four Muslim families attended the lunch in Newcastle and the women in each family wore traditional Muslim dress. Our volunteers responded well by changing their lunch servings to avoid serving ham, which is not permitted under Muslim rules.
A small but wonderful example of Australian multiculturalism at its best, maintaining our Christmas traditions but inclusive and respectful of people from other faiths and traditions.
