Cut to overseas aid disappointing
I was very disappointed to learn last week that our new Federal Government plans to reduce overseas aid by $4.5 billion and to put the money into our road system.
Back in the year 2000, some 188 countries including Australia signed up to 8 Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty in developing countries. The UN urged all of its members to contribute 0.7% of their gross national income (GNI) to overseas aid as a key part of achieving these Millennium Goals.
The UK, in the midst of a severe recession has increased its contribution to 0.7% GNI. On the other hand Australia, which has escaped the recession, has reduced its aid to less than 50% of the recommended amount.
What does this say about the culture of Australia today?
