Asylum Seeker Shock – we need to compromise
We’ve all been shocked by the news, in the last few days, of the large numbers of asylum seekers, including children, who drowned in Indonesian waters en route to Australia.
This does not omen well for the Federal Government’s policy of turning around boats, especially when we hear Indonesian authorities are encouraging people to leave their shores by boat if they wish to seek asylum.
We can only hope the leaders of Australia and Indonesia, meeting this week in Jakarta, will come up with a workable solution.
Both countries will need to compromise, we must never allow people to perish because of our unwillingness to negotiate.
