This Sunday marks one of the final #StandByMe rallies before the NSW Election.
With the introduction of the federally funded NDIS, state-based advocacy organisations have been under threat as the NSW Government has been reluctant to announce future funding for these agencies.
The #StandByMe campaign has been running since last year and presents a compelling case that asks the NSW Government to commit to secure, long term funding for disability advocacy, information and representation organisations in NSW.
Disability advocates serve a vital role in working with people with disabilities to get fair and just treatment in various aspects of their lives.
Despite the importance of advocacy services, the NSW Government has only committed to funding services until 2020. Understandably, advocacy organisations and groups are demanding more certainty from the NSW Government and will use Sunday’s rally to draw the community’s attention to this issue.
The NSW Disability Advocacy Alliance is driving the #StandbyMe campaign and rally, and you can let them know online if you plan to attend this Sunday.
For those unable to attend the rally, you can still show support by using the power of social media to spread the #StandByMe message in support of disability advocacy funding. Take a look at the Stand By Me Facebook page and Twitter account and consider sharing some of their posts onto your own page. You can also download a #StandByMe sign to print and hold in photographs and then share on your own social media pages.
