A surprising election announcement…
There were a few surprise announcements last week during the election campaign. One of the most surprising for me was the Coalition’s promise to pay every young, long-term unemployed Australian a $2500 bonus if they kept a job for 12 months, with a further $4000 if they kept it for 2 years.
Whilst long-term unemployment is on the rise again in Australia, the challenge as I see it is how do we encourage employers to give young people a job in the first place.
What employers look for in job applicants is recent work experience, good references and good attitude. Often long-term unemployed people don’t have these.
What we need are employment services that give people relevant work experience and incentives for employers to give disadvantaged young people a fair go.
