The Monastery

Chaplain The Monastery, Gunya Chiara and the Guest House was leased to Samaritans by the Franciscan Association in 2000 and is now used as for training, workshops, retreats and holidays. It is available to the public for rental and provides basic accomodation in idyllic surroundings.

In the mid 1970s Sister Angela Solling and a group of Sisters from the Anglican Community of Saint Claire went to Stroud in the upper Hunter, seeking a life of reflection and prayer. With the assistance and help from local parishioners and the community they constructed a series of beautiful mud brick buildings, the Monastery, centred around the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1997 another building was erected to house larger gatherings and was named Gunya Chiara, meaning the House of Healing of Saint Claire. A third building, the Guest House, was also erected at this time.

In March 2000 the Sisters of Saint Clare decided they could no longer maintain community life in Stroud and subsequently the Franciscan Association has leased the Monastery, Gunya Chiara and the Guest House to the Friends of the Monastery for use as a meeting place for workshops, retreats and gatherings.
