Samaritans’ Recycling Division operates a network of Recycle Stores in the Hunter and Central Coast regions. More than 90 Samaritans collection bins are located at Anglican churches throughout the Diocese and at other community centres.
Samaritans’ ten recycling stores have been responsible for the sale of some 41 tonnes of recycled clothing over the past 12 months.
All stores supply good quality used clothing to a variety of clientele - students, the general public and people looking for an alternative to traditional stores.
Many of the donations received can’t be recycled because of their poor quality—a constant reminder of the need for the general public and local church members to think of Samaritans when spring cleaning or getting rid of surplus clothing.
New Store in Windale
In May 2007, the tenth Samaritans Recycling Store opened its doors to op-shoppers and bargain hunters. The Windale shop has 12 volunteers already. Deb Mason said within days of opening the store, people began walking in off the street and offering their time.
“We haven’t done any advertising for volunteers yet. They just walked through the door. The local residents have a strong sense of ownership over the store. Sales are good and it’s just working!”
The store is located at 130 Lake Street, Windale.
New Initiative on the Central Coast
With retro-chic the new height of fashion and bargain shopping as popular as ever, Central Coast shoppers are about to have a whole new world of choice as from August 1st.
“Boutique 4 U” is a new joint venture between St Mark’s Anglican Parish in Terrigal, and the Samaritans Foundation and will not only feature pre-loved fashion, but small home furnishings and bric-a-brac as well. The parish hall has undergone an extreme makeover, converting it to an exciting retail outlet. The store is a joint initiative between Samaritans and the Terrigal Parish and will be operating Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 9:30am to 4 pm.
