About NAALA

How Can I Help?

NAALA is a volunteer run, non-profit programme, providing a variety of free services to Newcastle's African community.

The activities of NAALA run every Saturday morning in school term time.

NAALA offers English language support and Australian life skills to the African community and has a large team of volunteer staff & tutors.

There are a a number of programmes, which fit under the NAALA banner.

Each programme has its' own resources and volunteer staff.

They Are:

NAALA -
which provides free tutoring for African children and teenagers to strengthen their English language skills, runs on Saturday mornings.

NAALA Senior - a similar programme run for African adults, also runs on Saturday mornings. NAALA Senior runs at the same time as the children's programme. It offers small-group tutoring in the hope that students will support one another in their first language. The aim of NAALA Senior is to provide the adults with the opportunity to improve their English language skills and to enable them to consolidate their children's learning at home.

NAALA Kids - provides many of the 0-5 year olds with their only opportunity in the week to learn socialisation skills in an English-speaking environment. NAALA Kids also provides the NAALA Seniors with some quiet time to concentrate on learning English.

Every Saturday we provide all NAALA's with a free, fresh and healthy light lunch and a pick-up and drop-off service just about anywhere in the Newcastle area.

When and Where:
Saturdays in school term time at the Parish Hall, St Augustine's Anglican Church, 37 Winsor Street Merewether from 10.30am - 12 Noon.

Volunteers Required
Parish volunteers are needed to provide transport, to assist as tutors, to co-ordinate the tutor resource materials and to provide hospitality and administrative services. Initially we will be recruiting our volunteers from our parishes and as the project grows we will be recruiting from the wider community. Parishioners who are interested in volunteering to be part of this exciting project are asked to speak with Sue WIlliams on (02) 4922 1537 or by email swilliams@samaritans.org.au
