Welfare To Work - The Great Divide, December 2007
The Federal Government’s Welfare-to-Work legislation is likely to widen the divide between Hunter and Central Coast residents experiencing disadvantage and their more fortunate neighbours, a new report into the implications of the legislation for has found.
Jointly released by the Hunter Valley Research Foundation (HVRF) and welfare agency Samaritans, the report presents the results of independent studies examining the life circumstances of those requesting emergency assistance from the Samaritans and how they are affected by the new legislation.
Author of the report and HVRF Co-Director of Research Robin Mcdonald said that 60 per cent of people surveyed when requesting emergency assistance from Samaritans had gone without food in the previous fortnight due to a lack of money.
