Health Promotion

The Coalfields Healthy Heartbeat programme aims to reduce the incidence of heart disease in the Cessnock area by promoting healthy lifestyles. The service focuses on educating the community through 'Quit Smoking' campaigns, healthy eating and physical
activity programmes.

Heart Foundation Walking

Heart Foundation Walking is Australia's largest network of free, community-based walking groups led by volunteer Walk Organisers. Community members are able to join an existing group, or they can start their own.

Walking as part of a group helps you stay motivated, is safer and makes it much more fun too. Joining a Heart Foundation Walking Group can help you towards achieving 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Walking is an ideal exercise, whatever your age, wherever you live and whatever your ability.

To encourage you to continue walking, the Heart Foundation operates the Walker Recognition Scheme which includes certificates and other incentives when you reach walking milestones.

In the Cessnock local government area, the Heart Foundation Walking program is coordinated by Coalfields Healthy Heartbeat. Call 02 4993 3410 to register your interest in taking part, or for more information. You can also find out more at www.heartfoundation.org.au/walking.

The benefits of walking:

  • Reduces your risk of developing heart disease and stroke.
  • Helps to manage weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Can reduce the effects of stress.
  • Improves self esteem and mental health.
  • Is low impact (less jarring on the joints).
